2024 in Review #3 - Color Nature Photos

January 24, 2025 Sarah Marino

I’m glad I waited until January to pull together my favorite photos since I took this on December 30, 2024 at Point Lobos State Park in California. The park does not open until 8:00 am this time of year—well after sunrise—so photographing it required working with the more direct light instead of letting the limited opening hours keep us from photographing the area at all.

This is my third of three “year in review” posts. If you have not read the first two, you can find the first one with my black and white photos here and the second one with my plant photos here. For this final post, I am sharing my favorite color nature photographs from 2024 along with some reflections on how my photographic process has continued to evolve over the last year.

With 2023 and 2024, my transition from “landscape photographer” to “nature photographer” feels complete. I do not consider these labels to be important but do find them helpful for explaining how the scope of my work has expanded in recent years. Although I still consider myself a beginner and do not have many photos to share so far, I am enjoying bird and wildlife photography more than I ever expected I would, especially since it stretches my technical skills, is a nice way to fill in downtime, and is a good entry point to learning more about a landscape and its ecosystems. As I have broadened my photography interests to include grand landscapes, intimate landscapes, smaller scenes, abstracts, portraits of plants, and now more wildlife photography, my general enjoyment of this craft continues to grow.

2024 in Review #1 - Black and White

January 17, 2025 Sarah Marino

A blooming rock nettle plant in Death Valley National Park — one of my favorite desert wildflowers.

The end of 2024 turned out to be a bit of a whirlwind for me. After we returned from our final destination for fall colors, Zion National Park, I turned my attention to a full refresh of my website galleries. Because I was recovering from a badly sprained ankle, I had a lot of downtime to fill with the tedious tasks of deciding which photos to include, minor reprocessing, keywording, titling, captioning, sharpening, uploading, and then finally organizing. I had planned to get my yearly review posts out before the end of the year but instead shifted all my attention to getting the website refresh in a good place before we headed out to visit family for the Christmas holiday.

Favorite Photographs of 2014

January 3, 2015 Sarah Marino

I really enjoy looking through the retrospective collections that photographers share each year.  I always find it interesting to see where people have traveled, how a photographer interprets the places they visit, how a person’s work has evolved, and what images rise to the top of individual lists.  Although I have been inconsistent with participating in this activity in the past and am a little late this time around, I feel like I have a bit more to share this year than in previous years, as I can look at my collection of photos and at least say I like them instead of seeing nothing more than flaws and imperfections as in previous years.

I am finally starting to feel more comfortable in my skin as a photographer and am happier with the overall direction of my work.  While I think that most of my best images are still sitting on my hard drives ready to become something once I feel motivated or make the time, this group of photos makes me happier than similar groups in years’ past – not completely happy, but at least somewhat satisfied.

Photographing the Awe-Inspiring Aurora Borealis in Iceland

Aurora borealis display over Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon, southern Iceland

It is past one o’clock in the morning and we are sitting at a Walgreens waiting on a prescription that an urgent care doctor was supposed to phone in for me more than an hour ago. I am still hoping to get in a few hours of sleep before heading to the airport for our flight to Reykjavík, but it never really happens. I spend the seven-hour flight playing Tetris and Solitaire on my phone, unable to sleep and feeling miserable overall. Once we arrive in Reykjavík, we pick up our campervan, stop to get a few days of groceries, and head out for the five hour drive to the Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon. We stop to take a two hour nap along the way, arriving in time for sunset. We photograph sunset, heat up a dehydrated meal for dinner, and get ready for a long night. We are now approaching a day and a half with almost no sleep and, not surprisingly, all this traveling has only made me feel even worse.

It is March and we are going to be in Iceland for three weeks. Our primary goal is to see and photograph the aurora borealis (also known as the Northern Lights). Based on advice from some friends who traveled to Norway for the aurora and only saw it once, on the last day of their trip, we decide that we cannot miss an opportunity (opportunity = clear skies+interesting landscape+good aurora forecast+right amount of moonlight).  Starting a long trip sick with a growing sleep deficit is a less than brilliant plan, but at about 11:00 pm, we see a faint green glow on the horizon. This is what we had come thousands of miles to see!  It all instantly feels worth it.

Iceland's Iconic Icebergs: Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon & Black Sand Beach

Waves and Ice at Jökulsárlón's black sand beach, southern Iceland

In visiting Iceland for the first time, I most wanted to see and photograph Jökulsárlón (which translates to glacial lagoon in Icelandic) and the nearby black sand beach. With iconic places, the reality is sometimes terribly disappointing compared to the hype and I assumed that Jökulsárlón might be one of these places. I arrived with measured expectations but was instantly surprised at the size of the lagoon (much, much bigger than I expected) and the overall beauty of the area.  The lagoon is surrounded on two sides by impressive mountains and the icebergs - the first I had ever seen - were much more interesting in person than in photos.  And, the landscape turned out to be surprisingly dynamic, making for challenging photography.  After spending about a week over two separate trips photographing the lagoon and its neighboring beach under all kinds of different conditions, I consider it my favorite place in Iceland and a must-visit in a country that is truly a landscape photographer’s paradise.

Autumn! Like most nature photographers, I have been happy to see hints of fall all around me over the last week or so. Here is a small selection of intimate landscapes and small scenes from Colorado last year.
A beautiful, lush field of lupine wildflowers outside of Crested Butte, Colorado. I'm so looking forward to teaching two summer wildflower workshops in this area with the Crested Butte Wildflower Festival next summer (link to more info in my bio). 🌺
I went to Alaska during peak fall colors and did as I always do: pointed my camera at mundane but beautiful things on the ground. I wrote about this trip for the most recent issue of Elements Magazine and covered the experience of traveling in Alaska
While traveling to Oklahoma for the total solar eclipse, we stopped at the Quivira National Wildlife Refuge in Kansas. In addition to seeing many birds, we also stumbled upon a grove of trees covered in beautiful orange, yellow, and blue-gray lichen.
